A Surge Monitor is a device to the Lightning / Surge Arrester connected in series with it. The Surge Monitor consists of a milli-ammeter which measures the leakage current in continuous operating condition of the Surge Arrester, counter to count the number of Lightning / Surge discharges through the Arrester. The regular monitoring of the Surges through this device helps to understand the frequency of the Surges that occur and the milli-ammeter measures the leakage current and predicts the healthiness of the arrester.
ConstructionThe Ammeter and the Surge Counter along with appropriate circuit and Zno element are encapsulated in a leak proof container with a transparent glass viewing window properly sealed.
OperationThe milli-ammeter measures the leakage current which is the sum of capacitive current, resistive current and insulator surface leakage current through the arrester in continuous operating condition. The healthiness of the Surge Arrester is suggested when the milli-ammeter measured reading is falling within the green band in the ammeter dial. When the leakage current measured goes beyond the green band into the red band, it indicates deterioration of the Arrester.
The Surge Counter measures the number of lightning / surge discharges.
