Heat shrinkable sleeves are pre-expanded plastic tubes that shrink in diameter when heated, forming a tight, protective, and insulating seal around wires, cables, joints, and other components. They are widely used across various industries for safety, durability, and organization. 

Heat shrinkable sleeves are made from thermoplastic materials like polyolefin, PVC, or fluoropolymers that are cross-linked (usually through radiation) to create a "memory" of their original, smaller size.

Expansion: During manufacturing, the extruded tube is heated and mechanically expanded in diameter, then cooled rapidly to maintain this expanded state.
  1. Application: The expanded sleeve is slid over the object to be protected (e.g., a wire splice).
  2. Shrinkage: When the end-user applies heat (typically using a heat gun or controlled oven) above the polymer's crystalline melting point, the material softens and actively shrinks back to its original, smaller extruded dimension, tightly conforming to the contours of the object it covers.
  3. Sealing (Adhesive-lined types): Some sleeves feature an inner layer of thermoplastic adhesive that melts and flows during heating, filling voids and creating a watertight and corrosion-resistant seal upon cooling.

Installation Techniques -

3M Scotch Rubber Splicing Tape 23 is a premium-grade, highly conformable, self-fusing ethylene propylene rubber (EPR) based high-voltage insulating tape. It is designed to provide primary electrical insulation for splicing and terminating solid dielectric cables rated from 600V up to 69,000 volts (69 kV).

According to 3M technical data sheets, this tape maintains its physical and electrical properties regardless of the degree of stretch.

  • Voltage Rating: Provides primary electrical insulation for splicing all solid dielectric cables from 600V up to 69 kV.
  • Temperature Rating: Rated for a continuous operating temperature of 90°C (194°F) and an emergency overload temperature of 130°C (266°F).
  • Thickness & Elasticity: The tape is 30 mils (0.76 mm) thick and can be stretched up to 1000% to produce void-free, moisture-resistant insulation.
  • Dielectric Strength: Offers a dielectric strength of 800 V/mil (31.5 MV/m).
