Heat shrinkable sleeves are made from thermoplastic materials like polyolefin, PVC, or fluoropolymers that are cross-linked (usually through radiation) to create a "memory" of their original, smaller size.
Expansion: During manufacturing, the extruded tube is heated and mechanically expanded in diameter, then cooled rapidly to maintain this expanded state.
- Application: The expanded sleeve is slid over the object to be protected (e.g., a wire splice).
- Shrinkage: When the end-user applies heat (typically using a heat gun or controlled oven) above the polymer's crystalline melting point, the material softens and actively shrinks back to its original, smaller extruded dimension, tightly conforming to the contours of the object it covers.
- Sealing (Adhesive-lined types): Some sleeves feature an inner layer of thermoplastic adhesive that melts and flows during heating, filling voids and creating a watertight and corrosion-resistant seal upon cooling.
- Electrical Insulation: Prevents short circuits and provides an extra layer of electrical insulation.
- Mechanical Protection: Offers excellent resistance to abrasion, cuts, physical impact, and strain.
- Environmental Sealing: Protects components from moisture, water, dust, chemicals, and UV radiation, which is essential for outdoor or marine applications.
- Organization and Identification: Available in many colors for color-coding wiring systems, simplifying maintenance and troubleshooting.
- Strain Relief: The tight fit provides structural support at connection points, minimizing disconnections caused by pulling or twisting forces.
- Professional Finish: Lends a clean, tidy, and professional look to cable assemblies and repairs.
Electronics: Insulating and protecting individual wires, splices, and connectors, and bundling wire harnesses.
- Automotive: Protecting wiring and fluid management systems in engine compartments and vehicle control systems from heat, abrasion, and fluids.
- Aerospace and Military: Used for high-performance cable insulation, often in fluoropolymer blends, where resistance to extreme temperatures and chemicals is crucial.
- Telecommunications: Sealing and insulating cable joints and terminations in network infrastructure.
- Industrial: Providing corrosion protection for pipelines in the oil and gas industry, and general mechanical protection for hoses and components in harsh factory environments.

Installation Techniques -
3M Scotch® Rubber Splicing Tape 23 should be applied in successive half-lapped layers by highly stretching tape (for most applications this stretch will reduce the tape width to a minimum of ¾ original width) throughout the entire application until the required build-up is reached to produce a uniform winding.

Core Specifications
According to 3M technical data sheets, this tape maintains its physical and electrical properties regardless of the degree of stretch.
- Voltage Rating: Provides primary electrical insulation for splicing all solid dielectric cables from 600V up to 69 kV.
- Temperature Rating: Rated for a continuous operating temperature of 90°C (194°F) and an emergency overload temperature of 130°C (266°F).
- Thickness & Elasticity: The tape is 30 mils (0.76 mm) thick and can be stretched up to 1000% to produce void-free, moisture-resistant insulation.
- Dielectric Strength: Offers a dielectric strength of 800 V/mil (31.5 MV/m).
Key Features and Usage
- Self-Fusing (Amalgamating): When stretched and overlapped, the tape merges into a homogeneous mass of rubber, creating a permanent, inseparable bond.
- Highly Conformable: The EPR backing allows the tape to wrap snugly around irregular and complex shapes, such as motor leads or bus bars.
- Environmental Resistance: It is highly resistant to splits, cracks, and ozone when exposed to indoor or outdoor environments.
Typical Applications
- Primary Insulation: Splicing and terminating cables up to 69 kV on all solid dielectric cables.
- Moisture Sealing: Ideal for sealing electrical connections and antenna coaxial connectors against moisture ingress.
- Stress Cones: Used as primary insulation for building stress cones on cables up to 35 kV.
